Yuzen Hand-Painted Dyeing
Indelible Change through Mindful Practice
Yuzen is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique defined by five vibrant colors, applied by hand to create delicate designs and gradations.
In this workshop, guests dye their own Yuzen panels, carefully bringing brush to fabric with a quiet, contemplative focus.
Time has a way of slowing down as you dye fabric this way: your attention settles into color and lines, as your breath steadies, turning this creative activity into a moment of mindfulness. That sense of gentle stillness lingers in the work: the Yuzen panel you dye today becomes not just a decoration, but a gentle presence in your home, adding a splash of color — and a reminder of focus — to your everyday life.
What is Yuzen Dyeing?
Yuzen is a traditional Japanese silk dyeing technique, long used to decorate kimonos and other textiles with intricate, beautiful designs.
The process begins with the outlines, which are then carefully traced with a watertight resist paste. This allows colored pigments to delicately flow and fill the spaces within, creating the distinctive vivid gradations that Yuzen dyeing is known for.

Meet the Artist: Ai Inoue
This textile artist takes a unique approach, combining Yuzen dyeing techniques with decalcomania, a decorative method in which ink and paint are transferred from one surface to another. Her creative output engages with a single, enduring theme: the beginning of life.
