Stencil Painting

Design Your Own Furoshiki: Traditional Japanese Stencil Painting

Glancing at her designs, you will notice that Saki Kitamura’s designs are particularly detailed and intricate. A sign of her expertise on the art of Stencil Painting, known as Katazome in Japanese.

Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of Ishikawa Prefecture, traditional Japanese culture, and particularly Japanese Yokai monsters due to her love for them, Saki spends her every day carving out Katagami stencils.

In this workshop, we invite you to let your own creativity flow. Using stencils hand-carved by the expert herself, you will design your very own Furoshiki – the versatile Japanese wrapping cloths traditionally used for everything from carrying bathhouse essentials to gifting.

Come join us for a memorable workshop with a master artisan who lives in Japan’s city of crafts, Kanazawa, and take an unforgettable piece of the city home with you!

What is Katazome?

Katazome is one of Japan’s traditional dyeing techniques.
It involves carving patterns into paper stencils, placing them on fabric, and brushing dye through the cut areas. This process is repeated layer by layer to build depth and nuance in the design. Katazome has long been used for textiles that accompany everyday life — such as kimono, furoshiki wrapping cloths, and small household items — bringing quiet beauty into what people touch and use each day.

Meet the Artist: Saki Kitamura

A Kanazawa local, Saki decided to pursue her passion for art by enrolling in a high school with an art program. After an apprenticeship at a local studio here, she has continued to pursue her art, creating piece after piece using the katazome technique. Her work draws heavy inspiration from Japanese Yokai stories, resulting in intriguing designs with an otherworldly feel.
