Katazome Textile Dyeing
Re-seeing the Ordinary: Katazome Dyeing
At first glance, the motifs may seem simple — drawn from the ordinary things that surround us every day. But where others see nothing special, Nahoko sees quiet value waiting to be noticed.
In this workshop, you gently lift fragments of everyday life and reframe them as your own motifs through the process of katazome.
It is an invitation to look again at what we usually pass by.
Why does something ordinary become art?
Why do we so often fail to notice it in our daily lives?
We invite you to explore these questions with Nahoko — not through explanation, but through the experience itself.

What is Katazome?
Katazome is one of Japan’s traditional dyeing techniques.
It involves carving patterns into paper stencils, placing them on fabric, and brushing dye through the cut areas. This process is repeated layer by layer to build depth and nuance in the design. Katazome has long been used for textiles that accompany everyday life — such as kimono, furoshiki wrapping cloths, and small household items — bringing quiet beauty into what people touch and use each day.
