Kintsugi
Celebrating the Beauty of Imperfection

Nowadays when something breaks, our first instinct is often to replace it. There are times, though, when we just can’t let something go, particularly when there’s sentimental value attached to it. The traditional Japanese repair technique called kintsugi is built on this desire to bring something back from ruin, giving it another chance.
Through this workshop, guests visit Mr. Yagi’s studio to create their own kintsugi pieces under his guidance. After repair, though, the damage is far from hidden. If anything, it is emphasized, with the golden seams becoming a tangible reminder of the item’s story. Certainly, items repaired with kintsugi no longer look new, but in the process they become more personal — literally one of a kind. The kintsugi experience represents an opportunity to reflect on and embrace life’s imperfections, and the way that they can add a distinctive flavor all their own.
What is Kintsugi
Kintsugi, literally “gold-patching,” is a traditional Japanese technique for repairing broken ceramics using lacquer, named for the way that the lacquer is often mixed with powdered gold, silver, or other materials. Rather than hiding the cracks, kintsugi highlights them, treating being broken as just another chapter in the object’s history. It evokes aspects of Japanese aesthetics informed by Zen Buddhism, such as valuing imperfection, accepting impermanence, and appreciating the subtle beauty innate to use, wear, and damage. Repairing items this way can not only restore the physical object, but also bring back the strong memories and emotions tied to it.

Meet the Artist: Shigeki Yagi
Shigeki Yagi is the only kintsugi specialist in Yamanaka Onsen, a town better known for lacquerware production. Yagi takes a unique approach with each piece, skillfully blending traditional methods with his own personal touch, all while honoring the wishes of his clients. Many who have entrusted their ceramics to him have expressed deep appreciation, sometimes even being moved to tears at the feeling that Yagi helped restore their beloved memories and heal emotional wounds.
