Kintsugi is a traditional technique for repairing broken vessels using lacquer, rooted in the ancient Japanese philosophy of cherishing imperfections. Shigeki Yagi is the only craftsman in Yamanaka Onsen, a renowned lacquerware production area, who specializes in this art. Yagi approaches each piece with a unique twist, skillfully blending traditional methods with his personal touch, all while honoring the wishes of his clients. Many who have entrusted their vessels to him express their deep appreciation, often saying, “Mr. Yagi even restored my memories,” with some moved to tears, as the process of kintsugi also heals emotional wounds.
